The Tamil Nadu government is going to launch the “School of Excellence and Model School” scheme on Monday, which is based on Delhi schools with advanced infrastructure. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will launch the scheme here in the presence of his Tamil Nadu counterpart MK Stalin, at an event to be held at the Government Bharati Women’s College.

26 Excellence Schools and 15 Model Schools have been covered under this scheme in the initial phase. Thagaisal Palligal and Mathiri Palligal are the official Tamil names for the School of Excellence and Model Schools.

Stalin will launch the Puthumai Pen (Modern Women) scheme in memory of Tamil saint Muvalur Ramamirtham Ammayar, under which a monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 will be provided to girl students pursuing higher education and studying in government schools up to class 6-12.

Tamil Nadu’s plan suggests that the successful education/economic model of the Aam Aadmi Party

and the Arvind Kejriwal government can be emulated elsewhere in the country. This will help AAP strengthen its argument that it is no longer a regional party.

The improved infrastructure in the state-run schools plan is perfectly suited to the DMK’s “Dravidian model” of governance, which includes women’s empowerment and social justice.

This development may help AAP in future when it decides to try its hand in electoral politics in Tamil Nadu. You are not present in the state yet. In April, along with Kejriwal, Stalin had visited government schools in Delhi and praised the infrastructure in such institutions. He had then said that his government would set up similar educational facilities in Tamil Nadu. He had invited Kejriwal for the inauguration after the work was completed.

In the budget for the year 2022-23, the state government had stated that “Movalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Memorial Marriage Assistance Scheme” is being transformed into “Movalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Higher Education Assurance Scheme”. This scheme has been changed in view of the low enrollment ratio of girl students of government schools in higher education.

Under this scheme, all girl students studying in classes 6 to 12 in government schools will be paid Rs 1,000 per month directly into their bank account till the uninterrupted completion of their bachelor’s degree, diploma and ITI courses.

Students will be eligible for this assistance in addition to other scholarships. Through this program, about 6,00,000 girl students can get benefits every year. An amount of Rs 698 crore was allocated in the budget for this new scheme.
